New rules on trans fatty acids – the deadline is fixed!

On April 24th, the EU Commission decided to amend Annex III of EC 1925/2006. The new rules provide that foodstuffs for end consumers and food retailers may not contain more than 2% trans fatty acids in the fat content. From April 2nd, 2021, all foodstuffs placed on the market must comply with this Regulation.

Trans fatty acids are formed, for example, in the hardening of vegetable fats and oils and are considered hazardous to health. As recent studies show, trans fatty acids can also be formed to some extent in the deep-frying process with vegetable oils.
